When birth families are unwilling or unable to provide a safe and loving home for their children, Volunteers of America of Illinois works with our network of foster and adoptive parents to find an adoptive home for the child. Every effort is made to provide as much continuity for the child as possible, which often means facilitating an adoption by their current relative caregiver or foster parent. The best interests of the child are always the primary consideration when selecting an adoptive placement and facilitating an adoption.

Preference in adoptive placements is given to keeping siblings together and preserving existing attachments for the child whenever possible.

Families who adopt children through the foster care system often receive a monthly subsidy (financial aid) to help support the child's long-term physical, emotional and medical needs.
