Welcome to Volunteers of America of Illinois where we are dedicated to supporting and empowering people of all ages to create positive and lasting change in their lives.

There are no limits to caring … these words represent an enduring philosophy of service that spans three centuries.  With its founding in 1896 by two spirited social activists, Volunteers of America has honorably secured its place in history as a true American institution. The founders, Maud and Ballington Booth, envisioned a ministry of service dedicated to “reaching and uplifting” the American people. Their pledge to “go wherever we are needed and do whatever comes to hand” still guides the organization’s growth and development efforts more than 100 years later. The name, Volunteers of America, was selected by the founders to signify that the organization was comprised of people who were voluntarily choosing to help and serve others in need.

Also founded in 1896, Volunteers of America of Illinois is one of the organization’s oldest affiliates. For over 110 years, Volunteers of America of Illinois has met the critical needs of children and families throughout the state with a variety of strength-based, child-centered and family-focused services designed to strengthen families, promote healthy development and ensure safety, permanency and well-being for children. Each year, Volunteers of America of Illinois serves approximately 500 children and families through a broad continuum of child welfare services including foster care, specialized foster care, kinship care, family reunification and adoption.

Volunteers of America of Illinois is also committed to reaching families and individuals at-risk for homelessness through a variety of permanent supportive housing initiatives. In 2006, the organization began serving seniors and disabled adults through several supportive but independent living facilities located in the southern part of Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri.

Operation Backpack 2010

The first day of school can be tough for every child. It can be especially tough if you are a child who is homeless or living in foster care and you can’t afford to start school with all the supplies that most kids can count on when heading back to school.

You can help give a child in need a great start on their first day of school by donating a backpack and school supplies.

Volunteers of America of Illinois’ Annual Operation Backpack is asking for donations of backpacks and school supplies for the hundreds of foster kids under its care.

Our kids need:
Backpacks for grades K through 12 for boys and girls
Pens, #2 pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters
Loose-leaf paper (wide and narrow rule), spiral notebooks, 3 ring binders
Assignment notebooks/daily planners
High School Dictionary, Thesaurus
Calculators, protectors

These items only briefly touch upon the needs of our kids. For a complete list of school supplies per grade, please visit www.operationbackpackusa.org

If you would like to give a special first day of school treat, please feel free to include fun items, such as stickers, colorful book covers, fun pencil cases or healthy, non-perishable snacks with your backpack donation. Operation Backpack kicks off on June 28th and donations should be dropped off by Friday, July 30th at the Volunteers of America of Illinois office located at:

47 West Polk Street
Suite 250
Chicago, IL 60605

Also, if your company or team is interested in sponsoring backpacks for some of our children, please call to inquire about corporate sponsorships. For more information on Operation Backpack or to schedule a donation drop off, please call Erica Foreman at 312-564-2308 or email eforeman@voail.org.
